I love this photo because of the juxtaposition of light and darkness and how the light shines on Charlie’s (the wrestler) moment of victory. The look on his face is tired, and one can only imagine what he had to go through. But his head is positioned a little up, and his right hand raised high in the air. No one can question that he had completed what he had set out to do. Victory.
I have often thought of the word “victory” and it reminded me of Romans 8:37:
“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Jesus Christ was scorned. He was beaten and brutalized for crimes he did not commit. And he was eventually crucified. His enemies believed they had triumphed in bringing him down. They must have thought how great they were, that their problem was solved, and that was the end. But three days later, Jesus Christ rose from the dead. The victory belonged to Jesus. He had spilt his blood as payment for our crimes, our sins. He had wrestled death and won. He was victorious.
No photo, if they were to exist in the times of Jesus, could ever communicate that pivotal moment of Jesus’s victory. But we get a sense of the victory and we join in the victory when the angel said to two women who was visiting Jesus’s grave, “He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay” (Matthew 28:5 NIV).
